Out and Back

Snowflakes lightly falling, the calm before the storm The beauty of the mountains, the snow, the stream, the firs My body somewhat achy, a long journey just complete Across the rugged country, to the west and from the east Nestled in warm covers, I lay my head to rest Ages since such comfort, ages full of hunger, cold, and stress But now I finally get to rest, the struggle finally done The life I’d always dreamed of, about to be begun See for years I’d been a trailhand, back and forth I would go Accompanying the hand carts, and lightening their loads Called to make the journey, because I was seen fit To bear a heavy burden, and help others make the trip Countless times I’d made the trek, each with perils of their own But finally after years of work, I could start to build my home The joy I felt that I’d survived, not even lost a limb Many trail hands with my call, often faced a fate quite grim And I had my sweetheart, we’d waited oh so long The thought of her love gave me hope, and oft...
