Out and Back

Snowflakes lightly falling, the calm before the storm

The beauty of the mountains, the snow, the stream, the firs

My body somewhat achy, a long journey just complete

Across the rugged country, to the west and from the east

Nestled in warm covers, I lay my head to rest

Ages since such comfort, ages full of hunger, cold, and stress

But now I finally get to rest, the struggle finally done

The life I’d always dreamed of, about to be begun

See for years I’d been a trailhand, back and forth I would go

Accompanying the hand carts, and lightening their loads

Called to make the journey, because I was seen fit

To bear a heavy burden, and help others make the trip

Countless times I’d made the trek, each with perils of their own

But finally after years of work, I could start to build my home

The joy I felt that I’d survived, not even lost a limb

Many trail hands with my call, often faced a fate quite grim

And I had my sweetheart, we’d waited oh so long

The thought of her love gave me hope, and often kept me strong

Each time I made it to town, one more journey fresh complete

I had the joy to see her face, the time we spent was sweet

A few short days to spend with her, while horses rested and stores refilled

And then back off to the east, my duties to fulfill

But now those days were over, it was time to start our life

In just another few short weeks, she would be my wife

And as I woke from slumber, warm and full of peace

A feeling crept within my heart, my job was not complete

No sooner had this feeling crept, one came knocking at my door

And what he came to ask of me, made my heart quite sore

He said my son, “there’s one last thing, I know you’ve already done so much

But there is one stuck on the plains, and son he needs your touch

He is my son, he longs for home, he’s been away for quite some time

And if he will ever make the trek, son he needs a guide

So dear friend, it’s up to you. I know you’re ready for your rest

But with the winter coming on, I know I need my best

And if you choose to take this trek, to bring him to this place

You’ll begin to understand true love, true sacrifice, true grace

For surely you can’t have the one, without the other two

But you won’t understand at all, unless the sacrifice is you

So son it is your choice, that's part of true love you see

If you choose to stay at home, it's completely fine with me”

And then my heart leapt inside, I could see him on the plains

Cold, forlorn, slightly lost, clearly in some pain

He looked above, prayed to God, to find his way back home

A stranger I had never met before, but quickly love was known

How could I ever turn my back, I saw as clear as day

Oh passenger, I’ll take you home, if the Lord will give me strength

So oh dear love, please wait for me, I must go out once more

To help my fellow passenger, to guide him to His door

Across the plains he waits for me, snow drifts piled high

The journey just to make it there, could nearly take my life

Oh my fellow passenger, I have never seen your face

But I will surely give my all, to bring you to this place

Lonely nights await me, hunger, cold, fatigue

Leaving the future with my love, to uncertainty

But my friend I’ll come to you, out and back once more

I will never take my rest, until you find yours
