The Way of Kings
There is a way in life, Not many dare to go
It is the way of Kings, as I’m about to show
What makes a king, a king? The one who wears the crown?
The one with many servants? Or mayor of the town?
Born of royal blood? Or chose by those of power?
Surely he is king, who has the highest tower.
The one who rules the army, the one to subjects bow
The one who sits upon the throne, endowed with worldly power?
Well many say that’s easy, of course the king’s the king
The merry king of England, and Russia’s great the Queen
There’s princes and there’s barons, the dutchess and the dutch
How can you even question, that these and such, are such?
While surely I won’t argue, those given title rule the land
But who do they report to? Who did deal their hand?
There is a King of Kings, The one whom kings do bow
And I ask you one more question, did he ever wear a crown?
I tell you that he didn’t, never, not but once
And those who donned it forced him, and mocked him as a dunce
He didn’t have a tower, not a bed to call his own
And when surrounded by the crowds, it was often to be stoned
He is the king of Heaven, legions hale his name
To say he has a rival, would be insane to claim
Earth is his footstool, heaven is his throne
Each of us made by him, all our flesh and bone
So I ask again, who’s king? Is it he who wears the crown?
Is it he who made the heavens? or mayor of the town?
I’ll tell you who my king is, he rules the living and the dead
All royal that are on the earth, to him their knee doth bend
This King he has one purpose, to make Kings of you and me
To raise us up in his way, and share his glory
His glory might, and power, are far greater than kings we’ve come to know
And how we can receive it, Is what I will now show
It is the way of kings, he said come follow me
And if we choose to tread this path, like him we’ll come to be
He said to us be perfect, and I say we surely won’t
And thus the war we have inside, like thus has been provoked
To receive we must be like him, our character must change
He can’t give us his power, by handing us the reigns
You see it’s not that easy, he’s God because who he is
It’s who he is that matters, not all he has that’s his
His aim it is to give us, all he has and even more
But it’s sure to ruin us, if he isn’t at our core
If something else does drive us, we’ll be right out of luck
We’ll never feel his joy inside, we’ll be forever stuck
All things they sing his glory, but not by force of might
It’s natural, it’s logical, he’s never ending light
He can’t just give us his place, like keys to a car
We must become like him, if his place is to be ours
So this is what I speak of, the path to become like him
It’s what we all endeavored, into the world of sin
And now you say - that can’t be
He didn’t sin you see
And now I tell you one thing - Its sin that sets us free
Sinning isn’t freeing, but the option gives us choice
The ability to take that path now gives a second voice
This is why we came here, to grapple with ourselves
To change our very being, the most strain I’ve ever felt
This wrestling and struggle, is what I call the way
It’s all caught up in nature, while keeping it at bay
It’s in the heat of battle, letting peace hold its sway
It’s all awash with sorrow, and then choosing to stay
It’s lost in the ocean, not sure where to go
And choosing to press forward, no matter how long the road
It’s lusting after beauty, or money, glory - fame
And seeing in the distance, their hollowness and pain
It’s feeling rather lucky, you’ve been given what you’ve got
Then behold the brother next to you, and giving him your spot
It’s legs and lungs a screaming, one more mile left to go
And finding the voice that lies inside, to encourage him that’s close
It’s sticking to a diet, when confronted with the cake
Then having such control within, that you can even bake
It’s keeping all your focus, when distraction’s all around
Remembering your purpose, when many other paths abound
It’s being hurt by a leader, no clue to know but why?
And finding strength within yourself, to let no grudge defy
It’s feeling rather hungry, or famished to your core
And then when asked to fast again, you say okay once more
This life it would be easy, except for one little thing
It’s that little voice you have inside, that makes you want to scream
You know you want this one thing, but the other looks so good
What you’d give to have them both, if you just only could
Each of us endeavors, to become like all the greats
But walking the path to get us there, is for many much to straight
There’s oh so many choices, and many do seem fine
But we must choose to sacrifice, if we’re to be divine
That little voice is calling, but deep inside you know
If you’re to become your very best, the answer must be “no”
Many never do this, the animal’s too strong
The spirit that resides inside, hasn’t learned to keep it calm
And that is what this life’s for, to stretch our spirit til
We are master of our soul, and control what I call will
This “will” that I speak of, it goes by many names
Agency, decision, choice, it’s why to earth we came
I promise you, I promise you, the toughest thing you’ll ever do
Is to make the sacrifice inside, to kill the beast in you
For many this is daily, temptation doth abound
But as they learn to tame it, they’re sure to wear a crown
This is the becoming, this is what I call the way
To follow in his foot steps, we must control our taste
No it isn’t easy, but how else could it be?
You’re grappling inside yourself, which side will hold the key?
Wrestling is easy, when foes have different strengths
But when both match in size, the struggle isn’t for the faint
And see here is the beauty, you’re wrestling with yourself
It’s the greatest fight of your life, and it’s for what I call true wealth
That’s why we're here on the earth, the stretching of our souls
The spirit and the flesh ‘come one, locked in death grip holds
For a moment one seems too strong, but just wait one second more
The next will seem to have the fight, but then who’s keeping score?
The beauty of this match up, is not even one point is kept
There’s one who’s already won the fight, he broke the chords of death
So why do we struggle, and go through all this strain
What is asked is far too hard, many do complain
The whole purpose is becoming, stretching, growing, strain
And if we elect to take the course, we surely will come to reign
So in those shrieking moments, when the struggle seems so hot
Remember this is the purpose, its actually what you sought
If we can learn to cherish, this oh so great divide
We’ll find more joy in the journey, and not feel the need to hide
And in those times of testing, we’ll see things much more clear
See the path to navigate, and gain control to steer
This is the higher road, that many never choose to take
Consider what’s most important in your life, and you’ll know what choice to make
And if you dare to take this path, it is the better part
It is the way of kings, so settle it in your heart
